Message from Tim Shulz:

Hello everybody,

So sorry that I missed the reunion/ get-together I would have loved to have been there, but I finally got a steady job and the boss doesn’t like it when I don’t show up for work 5 days straight,……well he didn’t the last time anyway. Anyway as you can see I have managed to retain my wonky sense of humor and clear sense of irresponsibility,……I can’t help it just won’t go away.

If any one knows of a good counselor give me a call please. OK seriously now, shortly after CWY I headed off to Nova Scotia and hung out there for a while,…… twenty two years actually. Got tired of that and now I’m in Calgary, I’m not sure how long this will last but I’m going to try and give it a better go than Novas Scotia. I know  I know,… I have commitment issues but I’m working on it. Once again that counselor contact would be handy if you can help.

I did a couple of years with Katimavik as a leader in both Newfoundland, PEI and then Nova Scotia, and what an education that was, there’s nothing like getting in over your head to learn how to swim.

So funnily enough when I was in the Maritimes I met this gal that I fell in love with, we hung out for a while ( 17 years) and had a great life together. We created a groovy little nest in a town called Wolfville ( NS)  where we raised chickens, dogs, cats, and,……. oh yeah I almost forgot, two children. More on the kiddieos later. In Wolfville Sharon and I needed a job so we started a café right in town. It went really well and supported us for two years. However, realizing that we didn’t want to work that hard for that little for the rest of our lives we embarked on other careers.

I got involved in construction, which came in handy for renovating the nest but also paved the way for what I’m doing now which is working in the residential energy efficiency business in Calgary . I quite like it, it feels like I have a positive effect on peoples lives and that is of value to me. I was hired here about a year ago and my boss thinks I walk on water, I like him too, he has loads of integrity which is high on my values list too. I’m very fortunate.

While living in Novas Scotia my first partner of 17 years decided that she would like to go it alone. So I had to agree as that’s just one of those things that you kind of sort of need both partners to agree on. Although sad at the time there is one thing I have learned and that is there is benefit in everything, it may take a while to see why it was of benefit, but you learn to grow and let go and move on and that is growing up and I like growing up.

I met another wonderful woman later on and we have now been married for 3 years and are both very happy to now be in sunny Calgary. I think I have finally dried out from all those soggy years in NS. We plan on living in Australia in the near future, Lila is a citizen of Canada and Oz and has been proclaiming the benefits of living there for several years now,…….this place better be good is all I can say.

I am partially responsible for producing 2 boys, Dustin and Lucas. Dustin is the ripe old age of 21 and is living with his girlfriend (watch out boy!). He is a computer guru and loves selling computers and computer gear. He works with Future Shop. Dustin is a really great kid with a big big heart and a solid set of ethics. Lucas is our 15 year old “gentle rebel” he has his sights set on university already (I wonder if he really is my kid sometimes – kidding!) He just returned from a two year stint in China living there with his mother and now speaks Mandarin, and is crazy about snow boarding. Lucas is one of the coolest kids that I know. I see good things for that lad.

One of the other very fortunate events in my life was learning to meditate through the Brahma Kumaris here in Calgary and Halifax. I have been doing this for about 4 years now and it has totally changed my life. I would highly recommend this particular form of meditation for anyone looking for peace and solidity in their lives.

So if you are near Calgary or are planning to go through please feel free to contact me I would love to visit with you.

Well you probably have thought I'd dropped off the earth, moved to China, etc. Nope, I'm right here in Abbotsford still. Sorry I haven't been back in touch very quickly. Has been quite the spring. I just got through a major move and am settled into a new place. Also was out of town working Western Hockey League hockey playoff broadcasts. Getting back to normal now.

Wish I could make it to the reunion this summer, but summer is a very busy time for my business. Just won't be able to make it. I started the biz a couple of years ago -- doing a mix of shooting television news, reporting for the community TV channel, and doing corporate & event videography. Really enjoying it. Something new every day.

Getting together for the reunion sounds great though. I hope you all have a great time.... would love to see some pics when it's all done.

I'd also really like to talk to you guys on the phone some time this summer.... and catch up with what you've been up to. By the way, when I moved I found my old CWY photo album and stuff I brought back from Senegal. I've got a wooden mask up on the wall.... bought in the market down in the Casamance. Also when I was moving I found ALL the letters I wrote back home from Quebec & Senegal. Hadn't looked at them  in 20 years. I wrote exactly what happened without filtering it... things like "Well we nearly drove off the road in the pickup that had 15 people in the back of it. Lucky we weren't all killed" or "I have been so sick I haven't been out of bed for 3 days"... or "We got stopped by the army and a truckful of soldiers with machine guns"... or "I was dragged off to the police station and held for hours". Must have scared the hell out of our parents!!! Looking back on it .. just very funny!

talk to you soon - have fun at the reunion... I'll be playing a Bob Marley CD to mark the occasion from a distance :-)
